Hi, this is my first post so please bear with me.
i have a 16 soon to be 17 year old son, he is extremely overweight, probably touching 20 stone, he has given up his college course & is a complete hermit, choosing to stay locked away in his room for hours on end gaming, he is totally immersed in a virtual world. He secretly binge eats, not just junk but anything.... it’s got to the stage now where it is causing issues between my partner & I, he wants me to take the internet away, but we’ve tried this many times & all that seems to happen is I get a lot of abuse as my son thinks it ridiculous (of course he does!) I’ve tried to speak to the doctor with regards to his weight, but just get fobbed off, I am awaiting a consult with them again this week. Has anyone faced anything similar.
I am trying to convince him to get a job or apprenticeship but his anxiety & low self esteem is not helping.

Hi, I understand that this is a difficult and troubling situation. Perhaps, if his anxiety and self esteem are an issue, you could seek counselling for him. Boosting his self confidence and tackling the anxiety could help motivate him. You could contact Young Minds, they're an organisation who helps families who have children dealing with mental health issues, you can call them on 0808 802 5544. Maybe Social Services could help, they're not just there to remove children from their homes, they're there to support struggling families. You can contact them through you local council and you can read more about them here.
You may find it helpful to read our articles on teenage health and wellbeing. If you feel you need further support please e-mail us at askus@familylives.org.uk or call our freephone helpline on 0808 800 2222.
