Hi,
I have a problem with boundaries. Recently our 13 year old has been going out with friends. We text him to remind him what time to come in because has started to come home later that expected. He gets cheeky on the phone in front of his friends, we expect this but says i will come when i am ready. we give him a while then go and get him. We let it go once but next time grounded him for 1 day.
He says i will go anyway hasnt happened but what happens if he does. We understand we are not allowed to re strain him. So what have others done to resolve this issue

Hi, I understand that this is a difficult situation. You need strong boundaries, if grounding him for one day doesn't work then maybe a week might? Or you could withhold things like internet access or phone access or video game access for a week. Stick to your guns and show him that you're not going to bend. Of course you can't physically restrain him but there are plethora of other ways in which you can discipline him. You may find it helpful to read our articles on teenage behaviour.
