Hey, so basically my ex boyfriend (biological dad to my daughter) was abusive to me, my daughter was conceived through rape and I’m now happy with a new partner, my ex hasn’t seen my daughter since she was 4 months old and hasn’t paid a penny towards her. He’s now tried contacting me again saying he will pay for her, but if he does this it messes up my benefits and all that. He’s threatened to take me to court in the past. My current boyfriend has been there since my daughter was 9 months old and been there ever since, she is now 2 years old. My ex has also said that he can’t stand the thought of my boyfriend all over me and asked me if we can try again which obviously I said no. Is there a way I can get him to not pay for her as it will mess everything up? He also didn’t do anything for her when she was born, just made me do everything and even hurt me during my pregnancy, labour and after she was born

Hi, I understand that this is a difficult situation. I'm not expert, but I'm pretty sure that the government gets involved in maintenance pay, however you do not have to take anyone's money and it may be worth discussing it with your bank and whoever provides your benefits. I think you'd find it helpful to contact Child Law Advice, their website has an extensive archive of information on the law surrounding children. You can contact them, but you may be asked to book a call and you may be charged, on 0300 330 5480. You may also find some helpful information from Women's Aid. If you feel you need further support please e-mail us at askus@familylives.org.uk or call our freephone helpline on 0808 800 2222.
